Background of the Study

Data privacy has become a paramount concern for universities, as they store sensitive information about students, faculty, and research. Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State, like many higher learning institutions, is tasked with safeguarding academic records, financial data, and personal details from unauthorized access. One of the most effective ways to ensure data privacy is through encryption, which transforms readable data into unreadable formats that can only be decrypted with the correct key (Akinola & Olayinka, 2023).

With increasing reliance on digital systems, the vulnerability to data breaches grows, making encryption a necessary defense mechanism for university networks. Different encryption techniques, such as end-to-end encryption, public key infrastructure (PKI), and symmetric encryption, offer varying levels of protection for sensitive data (Sani et al., 2024). However, the adoption of these encryption methods within university networks often faces challenges in implementation, performance trade-offs, and the need for proper key management.

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of different encryption techniques for enhancing data privacy in Federal University, Kashere, and recommend strategies for their optimal use.

Statement of the Problem

Federal University, Kashere, struggles to maintain the privacy of data transmitted over its network, especially concerning students' personal and academic information. Despite the critical nature of protecting this data, the existing data protection mechanisms may not be sufficiently robust, making it vulnerable to hacking, theft, or unauthorized access.

This study seeks to explore the role of encryption techniques in enhancing data privacy within the university’s network and to recommend the most suitable methods for data encryption to secure sensitive university data.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the current data privacy measures in place at Federal University, Kashere.

  2. To compare the effectiveness of different encryption techniques in protecting data privacy in university networks.

  3. To develop a set of recommendations for improving data privacy using encryption at Federal University, Kashere.

Research Questions

  1. What encryption techniques are currently being used at Federal University, Kashere, to protect data privacy?

  2. How do different encryption techniques impact data privacy and network performance?

  3. Which encryption techniques offer the most robust protection for university data while maintaining optimal system performance?

Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to enhancing data privacy at Federal University, Kashere, by providing insights into the effectiveness of various encryption techniques. Its findings will guide the university in adopting secure encryption practices that protect sensitive data, thereby improving the university's overall cybersecurity framework and compliance with data protection regulations.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the encryption techniques used within the network infrastructure of Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State, and does not extend to other forms of data protection like physical security measures.

Definitions of Terms

  • Encryption: The process of converting data into a format that is unreadable without a decryption key.

  • Public Key Infrastructure (PKI): A framework for managing digital keys and certificates to support encryption.

  • End-to-End Encryption: A method of communication where only the sender and recipient can decrypt the message, preventing unauthorized access during transmission.
